Trees of Peace

Wangari’s Trees of Peace: A True Story from Africa by Jeanette Winter is a lovely book on so many levels. The pictures are beautiful and the story is engaging and inspirational.

This book introduces children to Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan woman who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize because of the Green Belt Movement which fought against deforestation. Wangari started by planting nine seedlings and she continued her efforts by having local women help her. By 2004, 30 million trees were planted from her initiative.

I was initially drawn to the book because my husband is Kenyan and I wanted my sons to be proud of their connection to this country. Heroes from the African continent are often overlooked in Western schools and exposing our children to people of color (particularly women) with amazing accomplishments is important. I also think the environmental theme of this book is critical. Her story shows children that you can make a difference to the world no matter who you are. This is the message we should be sending to all of our children and thus I highly recommend this book to everyone!
